Downtown Albuquerque continues to grow as a hub for the arts, and a brand new creative space has officially opened on Gold Ave. Welcome to Monozukuri, a multi-use art space featuring artist studios, a retail shop, gallery, and community gathering space.
“Monozukuri” is a Japanese word that translates to “the making of things,” with a deeper emphasis on craftsmanship, intention, and pride in the process. That philosophy is the foundation of the space—where every piece created and offered reflects time, care, and dedication to the craft. In a world built on speed and convenience, Monozukuri stands for something different: thoughtful, handmade work that values quality over quantity.
Monozukuri is owned and operated by Joseph Romero (Joe’s Bows), who brings his vision of supporting local, high-quality craftsmanship to life through this space. The studio includes resident artists, Brett Kennedy (Sokwa), Andy Torres (Mobius Theory), and Madison Van Der Lingen (MadVan Designs), who independently rent and work within the space, contributing to the overall creative environment while maintaining their own individual practices.
The retail and gallery areas highlight a rotating selection of New Mexican artists, with a strong focus on providing opportunities for local and emerging creatives. As an artist-run space, Monozukuri is committed to lowering barriers to entry and creating access for artists who are often overlooked or just starting out. Exhibiting artists are not charged to show their work, reinforcing the mission of building community over profit.
Monozukuri first opened its doors during a recent First Friday event, welcoming a strong turnout and immediate community interest. The space is now open and will continue to expand its offerings with classes, workshops, events, and collaborations. It will also be participating in upcoming ABQ Artwalks.
Stop by, explore the space, and experience what happens when craftsmanship, community, and intention come together. There’s something here for everyone.
